Subject:
cultural relevance?
Norman,
You have touched on something I have thought about a great deal over the
past few years. I may be sticking my foot in my mouth to admit this, but I
have come to believe that a work of visual art is often more meaningful for
the person who created it than it will ever be for anyone else. I am
gradually getting to the point that this doesn't bother me.
I wonder... when someone is moved by a work of art, it is the work itself
that inspires, or is it knowing something about the historical or social
context of the piece? If Michelangelo's David had been created by some
obscure carver and placed in Flatwoods KY, would anyone be interested? Hope
I haven't put my foot in too far.
