cultural relevance?
Clive, your comments are always so thought provoking. Canadian artists
are also in search of a distinctive Canadian style. Like you, I do not want
to rob local aboriginal heritage. But it is hard not to be influenced by
it, because it is part of my countrys history. I am exposed a great deal to
it.
I also wonder how much it is o.k. to use my own ethnical history. My
ancestors are all Norwegian. If my skin was an identifiable Norwegian
color...would I be more comfortable drawing motifs from that culture?
Alternatively...I am really a Canadian...my history and that of a Canadian
Indian are really more related. Canadian and Norwegian history must at
least be of equal importance. As a white person...I have a great many more
problems with cultural identiy, than any minority group that I know of.
