Subject:
cultural relevance?
Even though I'm a newcomer, I still try to think about such topics not
only about artistic expression, but also about everyday relevance in my
own life. I'm not trying to create a life - just live it the best way I
can.
In regard to artistic expression, I'm inclined to agree with George
Graham. Nevertheless, I don't think we can avoid being culturally
relevant. We may rebel against our culture, but our rebellion has no
meaning without a cultural context. Somewhere I remember reading, "We
known nothing about the hermit unless we understand that which he
shuns." - or something to that effect. Thus, for me, sculpture is an
attempt to express something inside of me that is very personal that
needs to come out that I use the medium of stone. Damn everyone else if
they don't like it. Someday, if it's good someone will pay their hard
earned money for it, hopefully while I'm alive and young enough to enjoy
it. I'll never know if it is "Great Art." Great Art isn't created by
an artist; it is proclaimed long after his death.
My thoughts...john
