Hi Robin, Thank you for the compliment. Walter's reply to
your posting pretty much sums it up. And, Gary, Just to avoid
any confusion, I was refering to architectural carvers as
opposed to artists when the original statement was made. It has
been my experience that while most carvers can create works of
art if so inclined, many sculptors can not find within
themselves the discipline necessary to produce architectural
carving. If an emotional response is a requirement for a piece
to be considered great art, than there is much architectural
ornamentation ( decoration) that could be called great art, just
as much of the sculpture out there (many of my own included) is
merely decoration.
