Robin,

Can you give some more information about this stone?

Simon,

I have a description from a marble supplier dated 1966......Sirocco
Green.....marble of the month in 1966 ! Says it is a coarse crystalline
calcite with small grains of quartz scattered throughout. Grey green,
greige and charcoal red are listed as the predominate colors of banding. (
didn't know 'greige' was a color....<:o) !! ) The grey green is due mainly
to chlorite and muscovite and is similar to serpentine. Unusually dense and
a lot like granite in it's resistance to weather. Polished for interior use
or honed for exterior. Happens to mention that this stone was used as
fascia on the exterior of the "new" multi-level AMP Insurance building now (
1966) under construction in Adelaide, Australia.

I have a small piece that I took a chisel to and it didn't seem too terrible
hard although I noticed it was easier to work one direction than
another........ I have hand made chisels out of some new age tempered steel
and they worked it just fine.....as far a poking around on a small chunk
goes. Some say I will not need anything but my hand made chisels as they
have been used on marble and worked it well. I am not a grinder......I'm a
chiseler <:o)

So, Simon, what do you think ? The smallest piece in the marble yard is 3'
x 4' x 5'......
