rounding edge on slate

Hi Norman,
I guess you don't want to spend too much money for a one-off job. A simple
solution to your problem would be to use a cheap 4 or 5 inch angle grinder with a
dry-cut diamond blade, together with a turntable like a potter's stand or a circular
ball race mounted between boards.
I imagine the workpiece is cut to a circular shape? Mount the slate (most slate is
reasonably soft to work) centred on the turntable, hold it on with double-sided tape
or hot-melt glue. Use the grinder to progressively chamfer the edge to the profile
you need.
The grinder will spin the stone on the turntable by itself if you hold it right.
Otherwise you could spin the slate gently with one hand while you grind the
chamfer holding the angle grinder in the other hand. Don't let the thing get up too
much speed, or it might fly off and hit the floor. Use the grinder to spin the
workpiece as well as brake it- finish with progressively finer grades of wet and dry
sandpaper, starting with 80 grit.
Regards,
Simon
