Hi Tim,
Yes I take the guard off. The 15 amp bruiser I find too
heavy to control. The 12 amp model is much lighter and
will run a large blade. I was using up my diamond much to
fast on granite with the 15 amp. Talking with Randy at
Trow and Holden he used the 12 amp with a 11" blade. Of
course he could not "recommend" doing so, but that is what
he did. I bought one and what a relief from wrestling the
heavy one. I have only use 9 inch blades. I also feel
that my diamond is lasting longer, perhaps because I don't
push into the stone quite so fast, but that is a good
trade off, seeing as about the worst thing I might do is
to dig in too deep. The variable speed lets you run the
larger blades at safe speeds. It also is a great feature
for contolled sanding...Everythings is just a little less
crazy when you can turn down the speed.
