Sawing, Grinding, Dinner, Blondeness and Philosophy
I am not an electrician, but the GFI is not a surge protector. I
understand that it works by shutting off the power if the GFI detects a
leakage in current anywhere (the current is not running entirely
through the tool, but is leaking out through some short circuit, of
which my body could be part). I carve only with water, and have used
electric tools for years. However, my favorite tools are pneumatic,
due to their much smaller size and the the fact I can vary their speed
with my thumb while I work. I do wear rubber boots and gloves while I
carve, although that is more to keep dry than to insulate against
electricity. I have felt tingles in my fingers when carving with
electricity and water when I was holding the grinder too firmly. I
take that as a signal to re-evaluate my position standing in a puddle
of water.
