maryland marble
Many thanks Simon for giving us the link to maryland building stone. You
helped solve a puzzle I've been working on.
I've been finding a varigated pink, lavender, white, deep red marble
looking stone in lots of stone landscapers suppliers stock yards. The stone
suppliers didn't even know what it was, just that it had great color, and
sold well. The most I could find out was that it was from Maryland. The web
site you provided has a stone called Wakfield Marble that sounds like a
perfect match . The stone is quarried in Carroll and Frederick counties. The
marble is coming in broken up quarry blocks and rubble. I've seen some large
chunks that have to weigh up to 500 lbs. Since its blasted , unsawed stone
its quite cheap, but of course you have to watch out for farctures.
I'm going to be getting a palette full myself, and I'm just passing this on
for all my fellow carvers who are always looking for beautiful,,, and cheap
marble. Its a very fine grained, hard , dense material, that remindes me of
Tenn. Pink. The dramatic coloring is great for abstract work!
Keep your chisels sharp,
George
