Kentucky Slate
I don't have experience with Kentucky Slate in particular, but Vermont slate
is *very* soft when it first comes out of the ground, which is how they're
able to punch holes in it for shingles without shattering the tile.
Or, you may have found shale which looks like slate but will never get as
hard as slate.
