Subject:
Splitting Basalt
I need to split a 6 foot tall basalt column lengthwise for a commission
project.
Does anyone have an idea how to do this safely (without ruining a $1000
rock)? I'm worried that the traditional method of drilling holes and using
feathers and wedges won't work with basalt because it seems to be pretty
unpredictable and sometimes will break if you look at it wrong.
I have actually split a much shorter basalt column accidentally by drilling
it down the middle and letting water freeze in the hole, but I don't think I
can count on this method and it's a long way to winter.
Thanks for any help,
