carving basalt
Hi all,
I've got a question for anyone that has carved both basalt and what is
known as India black granite in the monument trade. How do the two compare?
I've done a lot of work with India Black, and have been told that it is
actually a type of basalt. I can tell that it is not a true granite. It is a
very uniform stone that seems to have one kind of crystal structure, and
polishes up to a deep black, but not nearly as easy as real granite.
I've really got basalt columns on the brain, and would like to know more
about it. The pictures I've seen, show a more metallic looking polish, and
different tones of brown. So, how does it carve, split, grind, pitch etc,
etc.?
Thanks, I'm all ears!!
