drilling granite
I'm cutting large chunks of granite into blocks that I can handle to build a
wall. I have a low cost method of making holes for 1/2 inch feathers and
wedges, if you have a welder. Buy 7/16 mild steel rod, coat the ends with
hard-facing electrode, then grind one end to fit into your air hammer and
the other end to 1/2 inch dia. Cross hatch the working end with a cutoff
disc in a Dremel tool, making it sort of like a round bushing tool. It
drills granite at about 1 inch per 10 min. and costs 50 cents ! If you want
to get fancy, you can weld on a washer to engage the retaining spring on the
air hammer.
