Subject: Carbide riffers

Mike,

I own a set of carbide rifflers, but hardly ever use them - sort of as
the detail tool of last resort. They are overkill on alabaster, as
regular cut steel ones work fine. On marble they move stone alright,
but leave grooves behind that then have to be dealt with. I use them
most on granite and hard limestone, but then diamond files work better
and leave a smoother surface behind. I'd invest in a set of diamond
rifflers instead, if I were you, but, of course, I'm not you! For my
work, the carbides seem to fall in a gap of utility that is better
filled by good Italian steel rifflers on one end, and diamonds on the
other. They aren't a "white elephant," but neither are they all that
useful.

Hope this helps.
