Carving with torches
While I am spewing I must mention a piece of fiction by A. S. Byatt that
appeared in the New Yorker last year. It was at a time when I was very
concerned about silica dust and was having a disconcerting reaction to some
dust I inhaled. On googling around about silicosis one of the more
interesting things I turned up was that victims of exposure can sometimes
sprout silica crystal bodies from their skin. The story, A Stone Women, has
a main character who has similar but gaudier things happen to her as well a
deep inner tranformation. Metamorphosis. She takes up with an stone carver
as her transformation continues. Who likes to read a whole story on the
computer but here it is:

And Norman, have your ever been inside a Mayan temple? I wasn't crazy about
it myself but it sounds reminiscent of what you speak. Super outsides!
