Carving with torches - Uchida
Hi Bill:
Yes, he does. Uchida studied with Noguchi for many years, who was also a
family friend. BTW, Uchida will be at the northwest stone carvers symposium
in Seattle this July, as well as at the Sax stone carving symposium in New
Mexico in August. He is a wonderful, giving man and watching him work is
really a treat. I'll warn you, however, it takes a lot to get him
motivated to dance! But once he does, he's smooooooth! A few years ago he
taught us how to make simple cuts through the stone by using a tracing
chisel, fairly simple but you must have confidence and precision.
If you are interested in seeing more of his work, I believe the Brian Ono
Gallery may have a book of his work that they used to stock to sell. The
cost was about $35.00 and if you contact them directly you might get lucky
and get a copy.
Stacy
My favorite inverse sculptures are by Kazutaka Uchida.
