Carving with torches
Hi Ken:
I believe that Uchida told me that he DID work with Noguchi and learned from
him. I know that he was a family friend, through his wife, I believe. We
should ask him this summer when he is at Camp Brotherhood. I once had a
fairly long talk with him about Noguchi and how Noguchi worked. Uchida
incorporated some of Noguchi's principles about holistic images in stone,
that's the only way I can describe it, but then expanded upon it for his own
work. This came up when discussing the beautiful series of work he did that
have the spray of chisel marks radiating out from the vortex of the stone.
In the current literature that is being distributed for the Sax Stone
Symposium in New Mexico there is some text describing Uchida and his work -
and his prior work with Noguchi. I'll see if I can find it.
Stacy
P.S. I bet that Rich would know ....
