Japanese Stonecarver
From the photos, it looks to me like the pieces were split with a Japanese
wedge that I think was called a ya-ya. It is a slender rectangular steel
shim/wedge that you can insert into a saw cut and hammer in like feathers
and wedge. I have not used one, but I hope to acquire a couple at some
point so I can try them. These photos certainly inspire me to try more
splitting.
