Japanese Stonecarver
As I looked at the piece (presuming we are talking about the same one) it
looked like he carefully planned where each wedge would be driven to take
the optimal chunk off the piece. He would have known how the stone splits
and how big a piece he could get off with each wedge, so he could plan the
random looking ridges and scoops. It is absolutely stunning knowledge of
his material and tools. I imagine he would look at this stone for days or
weeks before he started the splitting.
