Japanese Stonecarver
Bill,
You misunderstood what I was saying about removing holes marks from the
stone. ( its not easy being me ) I don't see any evidence that more than
one wedge was used per scallop. All the edges are untrimmed. The shapes are
pure, and untouched. I think that what ever came from each splitting was
accepted and unimproved. I'm guessing, as usual, that what remained from
each split was carefully broken off, so that any tool marks would be left on
the site of the wedge, which is already a tool mark.
Simone said that it was unfair for the carver to leave so little evidence of
how he did it. I think each scallop speaks volumes! The sculptor shows total
control of the medium and technique.
