Japanese Stonecarver
Virtuoso rockface work in granite used to be very common in cemetery work,
especially in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. I visited Mt. Auburn cemetery
near Boston recently and shot a photo of one such piece.

Note how there is rockfacing right up to the ornamental carving and
lettering.
Those old granite carvers treated it as all in a days work, they didn't make
philosophical artistic statements. Maybe that's why they were paid by the
hour instead of exhibiting in galleries.
