Flint knapping
Simon - I doubt flint was only used because it was a by-product of flint
knapping. In some areas there's no good building stone so flint lumps
are/were used to make rubble walls. In some places it's prettied up with
flat faces and looks dramatic and dark - in some everyday buildings the
lumps are pretty much as found.
