Advice on a brief trip to Tuscany
hi norman - lucky you for such a wonderful FIRST TIME trip - i envy you
for not yet having experienced italy, and for the pleasures you still
have to come (particularly in tuscany, florence and pietrasanta!) - if
done right, you will live an unforgettable experience - if not done
right, you will still live an unforgettable experience - there is no
place on earth i've been happier than while sculpting, eating and
hanging out in italy (almost any part will do for me, i'm a shameless
groupie of anything italian) - i was just there last october and yet it
feels like years - sure wish i had bought that little apartment back in
'91, while the price was right - now it seems pietrasanta has gotten as
unaffordable as northern california ... i met my soon to be ex-husband
in pietrasanta and learned italian, and always wanted to live there,
but he wanted to live here, and ... so the story goes ...
my best suggestion for you would be to contact lynne streeter, who
spends her summers in pietrasanta, but lives in northern california -
she was my intro to pietrasanta many years ago and it was one of the
best uses of my money, ever - she directs marble sculpting workshops
there, using local artigianis (artisans) from the old school - sadly
they are a dying breed but lynne knows almost all of them - you could
inquire whether she would take you on a "full" tour of the artist's
side of pietrasanta - be specific and ask to see a "working" marble
quarry, working marble sculptor studios, various artigiani studios,
tool makers shops, and the best places to purchase tools (she may take
a small cut of whatever you spend, but her expertise is well worth it)
- she really knows them all - if you have the time, i highly suggest
spending at least one night in pietrasanta (hotel palagi is affordable,
comfortable, friendly and right in the center of town) - lynne's
contact info is: (tell her edie said to be nice to you, it's your 1st
time in italy!)
