artsy reading
Some good art-based books are: Girl in Hyacinth Blue by Susan Vreeland,
as well as her other books, Artmisia and the new one about Emily Carr,
the Brit. Columbia painter. She's a much better writer than Tracy
Chevelier of "Girl w/pearl earring" fame, Tulip Fever is another good
read as is The Flanders Panel. Can't remember who wrote these because
I've lent them out. The Collector by Evan Connell is a great read about
collecting (pre-columbian artifacts in this case). I've just bought a
book called "Nabakov's blues" which is about Nabakov's hobby of
butterfly taxonomy. Hobby is too weak a word, he was an acknowledged
expert in this area. I buy most of my books from Daedalus or Edward
Hamilton, both "remainder houses" and both have great selections and
great prices. Daedalus is a bit more upscale. atb, g2
