Norman. One thing to remember is that the structure of slate
leads to the spauling (Flaking) you refer to. Going slow with
real sharp tools should work. If you are using a pnumatic
hammer, throtle it way back so it is not banging the stone too
hard. As to the green thing, sometimes a good penetrating
sealer (impregnator) can slow this process. There are some that
will not change the appearence of the stone at all, but it is
best to test as every sealer reacts differently with different
stones. On the other hand, if you can put up with the color
change, eventually you will have a nice gray stone that has a
case hardened surface-- natures way of protecting the stone from
the elements.
