something more pedestrian
Although I'm really enjoying the "why" discussion, I was wondering if
any of you have experience with Mt. Airy white granite? It seems a
great deal harder than the usual gray stuff I work with, and I wondered
if it was the stone or just me. It's really eating up the tools.
How did I come by this stone, you so politely ask? Well, Virginia Tech
was remodeling a building, and in the process, dug up some exterior
granite steps, AND THREW THEM AWAY. Yes, it's true. A friend and I
rescued these 8' x 2' x 6" slabs from the Va Tech dump. Oh, brave new
world to have such people in it. Their loss is my gain.
I'm pretty sure it's Mt. Airy white (99% white with a black fleck in
it), as Tech has a thing about using local and regional materials (they
have their own limestone quarry from which they take building stone)
Having never worked in this stone before, I was surprised by how dense
it seems. Anybody have any advice on this?
Thanks,
Bill Marsh
