Quoted text begins. How big is your column?
End of quote.
Hi Simon,
Its really a pedestal, a base for a bronze bust by a local
portaitist. It's 42 inches high. Approximately 14x14
inches at the top and 15x16 inches at the bottom. It not
really a square section but more or a rectangle. But the
time I got to the rectangular form, having started from
a6000 pound rough quarry block, I really didn't see the
need for total equidimensionality. I couldn't work it on
a floor as I don't have an inside hoist. I have a tractor
with a boom to lift outside. After flailing around for
some time I set the the thing on a slab of marble that I
leveled up. And started to work with a 4 foot level to
level it up and find my centers. I scribed a square in
the marble around the base of the granite to square the
bottom, and by peering over the top edge, the top of the
column as well. Like most things I do it's quite off in
all respects but I fuss and fuss and it aquires harmony.
You could probably help me straighten it out quite a bit.
for even with my slab and my level I really don't know
what to make of my measurements and am working mostly by
eye. But its getting late in the day for this one to
change much.
Quite an expensive project for one with no granite tools.
Gotta have entasis. Its only natural. I enjoy the
accelerating arc, the various speeds of the curve.
Thanks for your interest,
Bill
