Ionic Columns
Norm - when I was a nipper we were taught that there
are essentially 3 types of Greek columns and they
progress in the order Doric Ionic Corinthian. Doric
columns are fairly plain, Ionic columns have more
decoration and Corinthian columns are full blown
beautifully ornamented. The decoration being
confined, more or less, to the capitol not the main
part of the column. More literally the names come
from places/peoples in Greece

The system was, apparently established by the Italian
Sebastiano Serlio in his treatise on architecture
1537?51.

This probably isn't quite what you were asking - but I
don't know of any other significance -
