Aesthetics
Ah, but........the whole thing about aesthetics is that it is always
changing, not only do we find new aesthetics that, (hate the word but it'll
do), appeal to us but new and different ways of interpreting the aesthetics
of the past, so what was ugly once can be beautiful now, and what was
beautiful once we can see as being hideous now, and know that another
generation is quite likely to make it beautiful again.
What we must never forget is that we bring our contemporary views to bear on
everything, we all know that often we very conveniently choose to forget the
values, reasons and motivations of other times and other artists, I don't
think there is anything wrong with that, that's just the way of the world.
Can you imagine the British Museum restoring the ancient Greek sculptures
that were once brightly painted to their original state? we prefer them
damaged and looking nothing like they should.
The first thing any new art looses is its newness.
