Uhn uhn. No no no. You take a down payment, 30 - 50% of the price of the
finished work. This covers materials and expenses. In your contract (oh
yes, you need one) you make it very clear, this deposit is nonrefundable.
This protects you in case they pull a flake out, or decide once you're
finished that what you've done isn't what they wanted, even though they've
signed off on the description and maquettes, (oh, and they pay for those
too). You then communicate with the client throughout the project. If
you're going to miss the deadline by a gross amount, offer them a discount
or whatever, but you don't refund the deposit. Unless, of course, you want
to.
