Not useless at all! The Noguchi pieces I was talking about are of
native Japanese granite that he found in boulder form. I don't know
anything about whether granite hardens after quarrying, though I've
heard limestone does (as discussed here). I've ordered a very thin
carbide point to try and achieve a similar effect as Noguchi's. As
George mentioned, combinations of stone type, tool width, tool
sharpness, and inherent genius are all probably at work here. Don't
think I can provide the last of these requirements, but the others might
be within my powers. I'll let you know of any progress.
