drilling
Hi Bill,
Have you tried drilling marble with a steel twist drill using a rotary drill (no
hammer)?
I don't know what size hole or thickness material you are working with, but I use
normal drill bits to avoid stunning marble.
If I have large holes to drill, I drill a small hole first, then enlarge with progressively
larger bits. I keep a number of bits sharpened so the drilling is not interrupted by
stopping to resharpen.
You must take care not to force the drill or the marble could scorch, leaving marks
similar to stun marks. If you can see dust coming out of the hole then it is cutting
OK, when the dust slows or stops, it's time to change bits.
Careful inspection of the cutting edges of a new drill bit will help you develop your
sharpening technique- you will know when you have got it right when the drill cuts
into the marble.
