Subject:
why carve?
This is a good opportunity to introduce myself after eavesdropping for
the past 6 months. I started to carve sandstone and sculpt clay etc.
about 18 months ago because I was compelled to.
As a child I loved building sand castles and dirt mounds. I always
enjoyed pottery and wood carving at school. Geology was also a
passion both at school and less so University. Too much looking
through microscopes and less time breaking apart rocks.
Living in Sydney, Australia there is sandstone everywhere. The
architecture is dominated by it and there is some great early works
and sculpture that dates back to the convicts. The dozens of life
size sandstone statues of early explorers around the Lands Building in
the CBD are particular inspiration.
Aged 31, after a long creative hiatus and desperately needing
therapeutic relief from my day job as a management consultant, I
almost unconsciously sought out and found a sandstone carving
class/club. It resonated with me and sculpture is slowly taking over
my life. I will not be surprised if I scheme a way of making a living
out of it at some stage. I am having fun with a figurehead series at
the moment.
There is also the knowlege that I will be leaving my sculptures behind
when my life is over. But that is just a bonus.
Warm regards,
Tim.
