For those of you fortunate enough to be within striking distance or
mid-coast Maine there's a symposium at Roundtop in Damariscotta.This
gathering lasts till the 17th and you can see many different styles of work
being done in marble, granite ,basalt, and other stone.
Among those working there are Emil Adamec from the Czech Republic,he's
using one of those large pneumatic hammers we were discussing for everything
from roughing to finishing. He's also got some nice bushing tools to go with
this hammer that are from some company that starts with a W,Witec is as
close as I could read from what's left on the carbide faced fine bushing
tool. They work just great on granite.
Barry Te Whatu and Johnny turner from New Zealand said they are having a
great time with our granite as it's "a whole different animal" as Barry put
it.They allow it's a step up from the river rocks they had been making do
with.
Katsumi Ida is working mostly in Basalt making very intricately carved
boats with very interesting detail. He seems to be working at a pace that
leaves most of the others in the dust, literally.
There's a host of other stone folks from all over New England and
elsewhere here in the states.Everyone seems to be having the greatest time
in spite of the rain. The info and creativity is flowing non-stop every
day. It's worth the trip just to see the tools these folks are using. They
range from torches to the well designed big gun Emil is using. My idea book
is overrun by drawings for water delivery alone.Makes me want to take some
time off just to figure out how to work a digital camera and learn how to
post pics.
