Mineral oil on slate

I'm just finishing up a house sign in black slate and am going to use
End of quote.
Karen,
slate and mineral oil: two issues:
-slate is very nonporous, the oil will NOT penetrate very deeply, which in
this case is probably no problem since there will be no mechanical abrasion
happening like on countertops made from slate (have experience with those,
DON'T DO IT ON COUNTERTOPS, it will look messy-stainy after a while). It
will also be possible to remove the oil with a solvent if you don't like the
look of it. Which brings me to the second issue:
-definitely make a sample with a letter or two and try out what you have in
mind. I tried something similar with soapstone and the oil was bleeding into
areas where I din't want it. But beware: In my case it took the oil a couple
of weeks to reveal the bleeding. So take your time!
Good luck
Bernd
