Karen and others,
I have one quick note to add about the materials used to darken slate:
The artists have spoken with have used black boot-wax, bee's wax, floor
polish, and mineral oil. Jim Martins in Salcombe in Dorset carves
frescoes on slate panels, polishes his stone with a wax, and then goes
back to re-carve the lines, thus getting a crisp look to his incised
lines. But it's really a lot of work, when the background texture has
to all be re-worked in order to leave any raised segments solid black.
There seems to be a lot of experimenting that goes on when artists work
with slate. That was one of the things that intrigued me about it and
got me researching slate as an art medium.
