This technique was brought to australia in the early 1860s, & was at first a
closely guarded trade secret;Gordon Brown in Sydney says that the first
practitioner worked behind canvas sheets (on what is now the Word Square
site in George Street)to keep the process from the prying eyes of other
monumental masons.Gordon does this work now, for repairs,& importantly, you
need a little ebonite mallet to hammer the cold lead into the cut letter.
