Thank you.
I imagine it would be good to cut the pins off at an angle so that they
set into the kerf deeper. With the pin at a 45 degree angle the top
edge of the pin is only 5 mm from the edge of the slate and it might
break out. But cutting at an angle might cause the pin tip to weaken
and it maybe curl down a bit so it won't bite into the top of the kerf
so well. So maybe just cutting it back a bit but leaving the top corner
strong seems right.

The silicone you mention sets up fairly tough does it? I assume its to
prevent movement but allow slow shifts with temp?
