Alabaster is often worked on a lathe, very much like wood working- even the
same type of chisels. I have a couple photos of someone turning alabaster

It took him perhaps 5 minutes, maybe less, to turn the candle holder in the
photo on the right. He used some kind of wax or resin to temporarily glue
the alabaster to a base for the lathe.
You could probably even turn alabaster with a potters wheel.
