Cutting holes and indentions
We have turned alabaster hollow forms in the gallery I work with. They are
turned on a wood lathe using carbide tools but high speed steel turning
tools would also work as well if you don't mind sharpening more often. The
artist,George Westbrook from Rockport Maine, told us he doesn't turn
soapstone anymore as it has asbestos in it.He uses alabaster for the bodies
of his pieces and African ironstone for the rims and collars on top.He also
glues these on and turns them on the lathe.
Another woodturning trick he uses is CA glue to bond cracks and splits in
the stone, just as woodturners do.I believe he also uses CA glue to mount the
pieces to a glueblock(wood) so he can mount them on the lathe.
