Dear Ian,
My immediate solution is to invent an anti-gravity device because I'm sure
the ancient builders must have used them?? <:-)
An old tradesman told me in the old days they used sugar cubes to support
the stone while the slings were removed, then the sugar was wetted and
dissolved, lowering the stone into the mortar. I've never tried it! Sounds a
bit unpredictable.
I've always re-slung the load after delivery so the slings are out of the
way, or used a Lewis in the top of the stone.
Is there another method?
Regards,
Simon
