we used the ice cube method once when setting a large hearth for a
fireplace. The carpenter made the opening in the finished floor to the
exact dimensions of the hearth, instead of leaving us 1/8 inch around, so
we couldn't lower it with slings... and we didn't have suction cups. So we
spread the mud, put in some ice cubes, put the hearth on top and waited.
Worked slowly but perfectly.
