slate question
re: "It's so dependent on how much a commercial site is needed,as well
as having inventory to show on there. Does anyone have thoughts about
how much inventory they prefer to build up or keep around, to feel
comfortable about selling off the work?"
I'm just starting out, but it took me four years to build a collection
with which I felt I could do a show. The selling of the work was
bitter-sweet, because although I was thrilled that I sold things, I also
felt "naked" because I didn't have much work anymore...and am currently
not looking forward to having to work/wait out another four years before
I can get a proper show together.
re: "It is daunting to see other's sites....I do not have more than 10
pieces....is that enough for an entire web site ? All my pieces are for
sale but I find people telling me they believe I really don't want to
sell them.....not sure where they get that......"
I think 10 pieces is plenty for an entire website. 2 or 3 photos of each
piece gives you quite a few images! Throw in a bio, cv, and/or resume
and some other stuff, and you're set. I found that once I had my website
up, I worked more diligently because I wanted to have new stuff to
"show", even if very few persons were going to the site. And why would
people think you don't really want to sell them? That /is/ quite odd.
Getting the .net, .org, etc is interesting. I've thought of that before,
and I'm still a bit hesitant to drop so much money on something that
doesn't exist until I demand it. And with so many new...extensions(?)
popping up every so often, where does one stop? ...Then again, it's nice
to know that it really is just yours.
