On Ice: & annointing the stone
I have just made a brief visit to Sydney, & seen the altar stone I
mentioned. It is at St Patrick's cathedral at Parramatta
(www.parra.catholic.org.au) & the whole series of sacred furniture seemed
very fine & beautiful to me. The stone is a speckled granite, sculpted in
China, the gift of the Chinese parishioners. The ice must have been large: I
have been using Chinese food containers (7.5"\4.5"/2" in Australia) to make
ice for stone settling, or even ice cream containers. When the altar was
blessed, & saturated wih oil, wine, ungents, etc., the sculptor who designed
it nearly had a fit, but it looks fine now: I don't think granite absorbs
much.(It's about 6feet by 6 feet by 3'2"). Regards, Ian Marr.
