English Limestone.
John, A Scottish, not English, stone that would be very suitable for a
stele, is the Clashach or Spynie stone from near Elgin. It is a "pale yellow
buff fine grained calcareous sandstone, Triassic", and is the same stone
that Pictish steles like Sueno's stone were made from. I am proposing it for
a memorial in western Queensland to a couple, of Scottish descent, who died
in a light aircraft accident: not just because it's a link with their
ancestral homeland, but because it's a beautiful, enduring stone: I have
particularly noted how it holds inscriptions in Scotland's frosty east.

There may be English stones as hard & fine as this, but I didn't see
them
in my travels: I stand to be corrected on that though!
With best wishes, Ian Marr.
