English Limestone.
John, I can agree with Ian on the use of 'Clashach' stone for such a
project as I have been using this material for many years now and in
particular a large 7 ton slab to re-create the 'Hilton of Cadboll'
Pictish stone in Ross-shire, Scotland.
As Ian mentioned it is a beautiful stone to work and can hold fine
detail well. I completed the first side of the monument in 2000 and it
is 'mellowing' just fine- for the past 15months I have been carving
the Pictish Cross in fairly high relief- the stone is still workable
even after so long out of the quarry, certainly harder and more
brittle than when I started though.
If a client has no particular demands on the type of stone used for a
commission I personally choose 'Clashach' as it is such a pleasure to
work.
Hope this helps
Best wishes
