Chisels: pointed vs flat?
Wow! Thanks for all of the tips, everyone.
For a while there, I thought I was missing out on something really
important. I started sculpting with only rasps and files (no chisels at
all), because the pieces were small and it was soapstone. But now that
I'm getting into larger stones and other types of stone, I was starting
to want better tools. Again, because I have no idea what pointed or
clawed chisels do, I thought they might help me with smoothing a surface.
I'm still trying to determine the best way to smooth a large, curved
surface. I had chiseled it with a flat chisel, and moved my way from a
1/4" chisel to a 4" chisel...it's still rough at spots though, and I
think I'll basically need to spend some time filing it down. Maybe I
don't have the patience to chip away at it slowly, but it seems that I'm
always chipping off pieces which leave indents where I don't want them.
