Chisels: pointed vs flat?
Dear Sandra,
I get my engineers scribes from what I'd call "tradesman's tool shops" down
here in country Victoria there is quite a selection of these sorts of
places, bearing supply places invariably sell tools and we have a franchise
called Total Tools.
The main thing that you have to look for, as they come in three different
types, a short plastic one, no good for our purposes, a metal one about the
size of a Bic biro with a fixed tungsten point OK but not as good the same
sized one with replaceable points.
The thing you really have to remember is that they were never made to be
bashed with a hammer day in day out, I use a very light little Japanese
hammer, my favourite, but a light wooden mallet does very well. Whenever I
show people how effective a very fine sharp point can be on marble they are
usually amazed at how little effort is used, just a very gentle even tap,
tap, tap.
I 'd love to find an ultra, ultra fine point that was actually made for
stone.
Best regards Clive
