Sealing Marble
Hap. Unfortunetly, a true stone sealer is actually what is
known as an impregnator. This is a below the surface treatment
that clogs up the porosity of the stone preventing other liquids
from entering. Impregnators will do absolutely nothing to
prevent the acid -calcite reaction which is what you are
probably dealing with. On the other hand, you could put a
topical or surface coating on the sculpture, and then deal with
it on a constant basis. They yellow, peel, chip, crack, and
some also react with the pollution and other environmental
agents. Most of these topical coatings also seal off the stone
in such a way that it can no longer breathe, and this also can
have some disasterous long term effects. Again, I recomment
contacting the people at Tennessee Marble and find out their
recommendations.
Good luck,
