Farriers are a great source for files/rasps. What I've been told is, as
soon as the farrier starts getting resistance while rasping a hoof, that
rasp gets tossed. So they often have lots, and frequently give them away.
At that point, they're still good stone, metal, wood, etc (and when they get
dull beyond that, they're still good for hot filing for awhile, then for
making things from the steel).
Quoted text begins. The great mystery about the bastard file is where and how did it get its
name? My theory is some blacksmith , long ago, was having a really bad day.
I'd like to here what a blacksmith thinks about it.
I'm trying to open the door to some entertaining speculation here
End of quote.
Could be. Having made a file, and knowing what a pain in the rear it is,
perhaps the name was given by my "trade ancestor" in "honor" of the guy who
assigned him the task.
